There are many great backgrounds and grungy aspects that tie the feeling of the age it takes place. They did pretty well fleshing out all of the scenes everything takes place in. It’s nice to see the variety within visual novels that are also consistent. Even the subtle changes between character expressions and posture created a more immersive feeling, instead of just having a character sit there with a different expression. But sometimes the art style of the characters themselves, such as the faces, does not match everything else. It seems they’re out of place or not the same style portrayed in their surroundings. The music puts a decent setting during certain dialog or choices but quickly gets underwhelming because of the few soundtracks currently in the game.
Alongside that, a lot of the phrasing of words was kind of off. This mainly could be because they translated from Russian to English. It threw some of the potential investment in the story with some weird words way out of place.
The story of Sanator: Scarlet Scarf is based on the legend of the Plague Maiden. This maiden held a bloody cloth, and when she waved the cloth at people or homes, they would die of illness. This act made people lock themselves inside their homes, with boarded windows and latched doors. But doing this would cause these people to starve. No one knows where or why this sickness spreads in their city, but everyone is on edge, believing anything that might be rumored. Similar to the game’s story, but with additional elements on the personification of the Plague Maiden, and other abilities within characters. Many more supernatural things take place, with things being more real in that world from spiritual seals on doors to taking medicine to stay safe. Though no one knows what works, all they can do is hope the doctors can keep them safe. Even though trusting the ones who seem to take life is kind of hard to keep on good terms. Multiple path choices make it look like there could be different endings solely from a major choice that is made in the beginning. All of it really depends on what you would do if you were in their shoes, or maybe choose something that you’d think the character would do.
I did find it an interesting take on the legend, but some problems arise when you’re forced to get all the different first setting endings. Though currently, it seems they are adding more to the story later on. Not so much as being released in chapters, but just adding to the story so far. It’s incredibly short, even for something that would be called a short story.

This was interesting enough to make me want to see more from the devs. But currently, it’s a bit short for my taste. There seem to be many routes you could take, depending on what you choose. I hope they are working more on that. You can show them support for their story by buying their game on Steam for $9.99. If you don’t enjoy super short visual novels in progress, I’d suggest picking it up on sale.
